Although the game is fairly linear, it contains many storylines which you can follow that don't impact the rest of the game. Most often, you are rewarded for completing a side quest by being able to recruit one of the other party members you met at NostiksManor at the beginning of the game. (Once you get that character, you can add or remove them from within your current 2-person party by returning to the manor and speaking to the Butler.)
You can change the order of members in your party anytime during gameplay.
